VINELAND, NJ - The Spartan Softball team knew that they had a chance to part of history on Tuesday afternoon, and they made sure they took care of business.
Northampton, behind the hitting of
Casey Ord (3 for 5) and
Tiffany Kobordo (2 for 3) and the pitching of
Lindsay Frontino (4-hit shutout), defeated Cumberland County College, 7-0, in game one of their Region XIX doubleheader, giving Sam Carrodo his 300th victory as Head Coach of the Spartans.
"I am very thankful" remarked Carrodo, who entered Tuesday with a career record of 299-58, "you don't win 300 games without great players and great assistants, and I have been blessed to have both. This is really a team award and I just want to thank everyone who has been part of the journey the last 13 years."
Carrodo began his career at NCC during the 1997-98 season, finishing with a 12-5 record. During his 12 full seasons in the dugout, the Spartans have never had a losing record, compiled a 94-game winning streak from 2005-2007, captured five EPCC championships and four PCAA state titles.
During NCC's first season as a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) in 2009, Carrodo led the team to a #7 national ranking and a record of 27-10, finishing as Region XIX runners-up.
The Spartans did not let the emotion of the game one victory bother them, as they completed the sweep with an 11-0 win in game two.
Krysten Rockovits earned the victory, striking out four and walking none.
Laura Bartek was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI and
Kate Check added two runs scored to her 2 for 4 performance at the plate to lead NCC.
NCC, now 21-5 overall and 14-2 in conference play, return to action on April 17th when they travel to Bergen County College.
