BETHLEHEM, Pa. - On a day when their defense wasn't up to par, NCC rode the right arm of sophomore Lindsay Frontino to salvage a split with Gloucester County College on Sunday in a Region XIX doubleheader.
After dropping game one 9-3, the Spartans came out in game two knowing they needed a victory to stay in contention for the #1 seed in the upcoming Region XIX playoffs.
The Roadrunners scored first, plating a run in the top of the 3rd.
NCC responded in the bottom of the third as Casey Ord doubled to left center and Gina Falco then launched a two-run homerun. Kate Check reached base on an error and then after back to back walks, scored on a sacrifice fly by Ashley Venturino, giving Northampton a 3-1 lead after three innings.
Gloucester battled back in the top of the 4th, scoring two runs on a single, an error, two stolen bases and a walk, tying the game at 3-3.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 6th when Tiffany Kobordo singled to center and then scored the winning run when Kate Check laced a single to right that was misplayed, allowing Kobordo to score from first base.
Frontino (7 hits, 3 K's, 1 BB) shut the door in the top of the 7th as Check pulled off an unassisted double play to end the game and preserve the 4-3 victory.
NCC moves to 24-6 overall and finishes 17-3 in Region XIX.
The Spartans host NJCAA Division II County College of Morris on Tuesday at 3:30pm.
