The Program - Women's Basketball

Women's Basketball has a long and storied history on the Northampton campus, since the inception of the program in 1970 the Spartans have captured 12 Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference (EPCC) titles, six Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association (PCAA) state championships, 10 Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (EPAC) titles, two NJCAA Region 19 championships, two NJCAA District titles and have made two NJCAA National Tournament appearances.  

The 2025-26 season marked the second year on the sidelines for Head Coach Carly Gallagher.  Gallagher guided the Spartans to an 18-9 overall mark, including a 12-6 record in Region 19 play, which earned Northampton the #3 seed for the Region 19 playoffs. Layla Sweatte earned Region 19 Player of the Year Honors and was also named EPAC Player of the Year for the second time.  Gallagher earned EPAC Coach of the Year honors following the season. 

The 2024-25 season marked the beginning of the Carly Gallagher era, as the new Spartan head coach led Northampton to a 17-10 record and spot in the Region 19 Final Four.  Layla Sweatte earned Honorable Mention All-American and First Team All-Region honors and was named EPAC Player of the Year, becoming the 6th Spartan to win that honor.  Anisha Sepulveda was a Second Team All-Region selection and was chosen for the First Team in the EPAC. 

The Spartans captured their 3rd consecutive EPAC title in 2023-24, finishing 14-7 overall, ranked 13th in the country.  Sophomore Kania Day was named Region 19 and EPAC Player of the Year, while Zoe Cruz and Shanaiya Ellis each earned postseason honors as well.  Head Coach Terrence Bomar earned his 3rd straight Coach of the Year Award.

2022-23 was a coming out season for 2nd year mentor Terrence Bomar, as his Spartans captured the Region 19 Championship and advanced to the NJCAA National Tournament, where they finished 12th.  The Spartans won their 2nd consecutive EPAC championship, behind all-conference standouts Alayna Day and Zoe Cruz.  Day was also named 2nd team All-Region for the second year in a row.  Bomar took home Conference, Region and District Coach of the Year Honors, as Northampton finished 20-8 overall. 

After missing out on the 2020-21 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Northampton women's basketball team returned to the hardwood under the direction of 1st year coach Terrence Bomar.  The Spartans finished the season with an overall record of 14-7, winning the EPAC title, earning the #2 seed for the Region 19 tournament and making multiple appearances in the NJCAA top-15 national poll.  Coach Bomar was named EPAC Coach of the Year, while Briona McClain, Alayna Day and Xion Spence were named All-Conference.  Day also earned All-Region honors, being named to the Second Team. 

The 2019-20 season saw the Spartans finish 9-12 overall, missing the Region XIX playoffs for the second consecutive season.  Briona McClain and Ashley Robinson were named First Team All-EPAC.

2018-19 was a re-building year for the Spartans, as they missed the Region XIX playoffs for the first time since becoming members of the NJCAA in 2009-10.  Northampton finished 7-14 overall and 4-6 in conference play.  The Spartans qualified for the inaugural EPAC Tournament, falling to #1 seed Philadelphia in the semi-finals. Freshman Kelsey Miller led the team in scoring at 11.9 points per game, while Briana Peterson topped the rebounding charts at 10.4 rpg. 

The 2017-18 season was the inaugural campaign for Head Coach Alyssa Bonenberger, who had served as an assistant on Coach Tara Belfield's staff during the 2016-17 season.  Bonenberger guided the Spartans to a 17-9 record, their 6th consecutive EPAC title and their 6th Final Four appearance in nine seasons  Sophomore Dom Moser became the program's all-time leading scorer, passing Tiara Aziz, en route to earning Region XIX Player of the Year honors as well as being named EPAC Player of the Year for the second consecutive season.  Moser joined Aziz as the only two Spartan women's basketball players to earn the prestigious Region XIX Player of the Year award.  Moser also became the third women's basketball player to earn NJCAA All-American honors, joining Aziz and Halie Cintron. 

The 2016-17 campaign saw the Spartans finish 19-6 overall, capture their 5th consecutive EPAC Championship and advance to the Region XIX title game, before falling to Brookdale Community College.  Dom Moser earned EPAC Player of the Year honors and was named First Team All-Region, while Deana McKeller was named First Team All Conference.  The Final Four appearance was the 5th in eight seasons for the Spartans. 

2015-16 marked a new era in women's basketball at Northampton, as long-time assistant Tara Belfield took over as head coach for veteran mentor Art Wolfe, who stepped down after 25 seasons at the helm.  Belfield led Northampton to a 20-4 mark, including an 8-0 mark in conference play.  The Spartans advanced to the Region XIX Final Four, falling to eventual champion Ocean County College, 62-60, in the semifinals. Julia Craig earned First Team All-Region honors, while Zeniyah Sanders and Amber Farnholtz also earned all region accolades. The Final Four appearance was the team's fourth since joining the NJCAA. 

Hall of Fame Head Coach Art Wolfe (462-179), who guided the Spartans for 25 seasons, led the Spartans to their third consecutive conference championship in 2014-15, as the team finished 19-9 overall and 8-0 in conference play.  The Spartans advanced to their third Region Final Four in program history, falling to #1 Cumberland.  Lauren Thompson, Nicole Amann and Julia Craig each earned All-Conference accolades.

The Spartans moved to the NJCAA in 2009-10 and quickly made a name for themselves, earning a playoff berth in their first season of NJCAA competition, led by 3rd Team All-Region selection Ashley Slater.  NCC went 10-10 in Region play and lost to Passaic County Community College (NJ) in the Regional playoffs.

In 2010-11, Northampton went 18-2 in Region XIX (23-6) overall, earned their first-ever national ranking and finished as the Region runner-up, losing to Brookdale in the championship game.  Halie Cintron (Allen) earned 1st Team All-Region honors and Dee Brown (Emmaus) was named to the 2nd Team.

2011-12 was a breakthrough season for the Lady Spartans, in just their third year of NJCAA competition Northampton finished the regular season with a 20-2 record in Region XIX play, which earned them the #2 seed for the Regional Tournament.  NCC defeated Brookdale in the semi-finals and then knocked off #1 seed Ocean County College, 49-47, in the Regional Championship game to earn the college's first-ever Region XIX Championship.  NCC advanced to the NJCAA national tournament in Rochester, Minnesota, where they finished 6th, losing to Roxbury Community College (MA), defeating Northland Community & Technical College (MN) and falling to Montgomery College (MD), finishing the season with a 25-6 record.  Coach Wolfe was named Region XIX Coach of the Year and District Coach of the Year.  Halie Cintron earned 1st Team All-Region honors for the second straight season, while freshman Tiara Aziz (Easton) was a 2nd Team selection and Dee Brown was named to the 3rd team.  Cintron also became the first Northampton basketball player (male or female) to earn NJCAA All-American honors, as she was named to the third team.

2012-13 was another banner year for the Spartans, as they won the inaugural Eastern Pennsylvania Athletic Conference (EPAC) championship, were ranked #1 in the country for six consecutive weeks and finished with an overall record of 24-2.  Tiara Aziz broke the career scoring record, finishing her career with 908 points, while being named a NJCAA All-American, EPAC Player of the Year and Region XIX Player of the Year.

The Spartans won their second consecutive EPAC championship in 2013-14, going 10-0.  NCC finished the season with a record of 18-6, falling in the Region XIX playoffs to Middlesex County College.  Brianna Morales and Katie Schickling earned First Team All-Conference honors and Second Team All-Region accolades, while Schickling set the Northampton records for 3-pointers in a game, season and career.
