SPARTANS IN THE COMMUNITY

In the 2014-2015 academic year the Northampton Spartan student athletes have already done over 2,000 hours of community service as well as donate over $1,500 in both cash donations and supplies to local schools and charities. Please check out the ways in which the athletes have volunteered their time. Stay tuned as the Spartans have many more activities planned for this year!


8/27-8/28/2014                     Move-in day
Members of both the Baseball and Volleyball team assisted with the move in for on campus residents. They made it a smooth transition for these students by carrying their belongings into their dorm room and helping them to unpack.
 
9/6/2013                              Via Marathon
The Baseball team arrived at 5:00 AM to set up the tents at the finish line as well as assembling the course and passing out water at the water stations.
 
9/21/2014                            American Heart Association Walk
Before, during and after this on campus walk the Baseball, Softball, Volleyball and Women’s Basketball teams helped to assemble tents, participate in the kid zone and sponsor area, direct traffic, pass out water and clean up after the event.
 
9/11-9/25/2014                     Stuff the Bus
All sports were represented as well as students in the Sports Management program by providing several bins full of school supplies for community schools in Bangor as well as Fountain Hill Elementary. Select student athletes as well as Sam Spartan stuffed the bus with the over flowing bins on the morning of September, 25th.
 
10/4/2014                            Miracle League
The baseball team served as “angels in the outfield” by assisting young athletes with special needs to play baseball on an artificial surface. They also worked the concession stand so that parents were able to watch their children play.
 
10/8/2014                            Dig Pink Volleyball Match
Volleyball raised $300 dollars through raffle ticket sales in order to donate to a local breast cancer charity. They also wore pink in support of the cause.
 
10/11/2014                         Light the Night
Women’s soccer donated over $600 to donate to the fight against Leukemia and Lymphoma!
 
10/19/2014                         Runners World Half Marathon and Festival
Women’s Soccer and Cross Country set up and broke down water stations. They also directed runners throughout the duration of the race and cheered them on.
 
10/23/2014                         Campus Tours

Cross Country assisted the admissions office giving campus tours to potential students and highlighting all of the great features Northampton has to offer.
 
10/26/2014                         Easton Halloween Parade
Walked with Student Life in the Halloween Parade; handing out candy and greeting parade goers. They also set up the float that they road on.
 
10/31/2014                         Trick or Canning
The Softball team went trick or treating only instead of treats they received canned goods that were given to a local soup kitchen.
 
11/1/2014                            Trinity Arc Soup Kitchen
Men’s and Women’s soccer cooked, served and cleaned up at the trinity arc soup kitchen. Both teams served and socialized with the homeless and less fortunate of Easton Pennsylvania.
 
11/3/2014                            Volunteers of America Children’s Center
Women’s Basketball played games with children ages 3-11. In addition to this they read books to the young students.

11/15/14                              Spartan Sprint
Cross Country helped to set up the on campus 5k. They were charged with the task of directing runners, passing out water and scoring the competitors as they completed the race.

11/15/14                              Trinity Ark Soup Kitchen
Tennis planned and prepared lunch for over 80 people at a local soup kitchen. They shopped for all ingredients as well as providing to-go bags with the leftovers. They had a great time interacting and helping the community.

11/20/14                              Volunteers of America Children’s Center
Women’s Basketball played games with children ages 3-11. In addition to this they read books to the young students.

11/18/14                              4 Sam
Helped to raise money “4 Sam” Smith. The son of Bob Smith (Humanities and Social Sciences) who was in a car accident and in critical care.

11/24/14                              Cops N’ Kids
Members of the Lacrosse, Softball and Tennis teams read to students of different ages at Washington Elementary School of the Bangor School District to promote literacy and generate excitement for students to read.

12/3/14                               Holiday Hope Chest
All student athletes participated in this campus wide event. Each student athlete filled a shoe box with toys for specific age groups. Over 500 wrapped boxes were donated!

12/5/14                               Cancer Support Community
Women’s Soccer helped the organization to move into their new office building.

12/1- 12/15/14                    Coat Drive
Coats were collected outside of the athletic offices and given to the Salvation Army. Over 80 coats  were donated.

2/7/15                                 Trinity Ark Soup Kitchen
Members of the Volleyball team served a meal to approximately 50 people. Majority of individuals were from a homeless camp located in Easton,PA.

2/11/15- 5/15/15                 Special Olympics
Softball is partnering with the Special Olympics of Bethlehem by helping their athletes to play softball. They will be running practices as well as helping at games.
