BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton women's volleyball team outlasted Montgomery County Community College, 3-2, in a thrilling five set match on Thursday night, to remain undefeated on the season.
Northampton jumped out quickly in the highly anticipated matchup, winning set one 25-13 and set two 25-12.
Montgomery responded with a strong third set, winning 25-22, which was NCC's first set they had dropped this season. The Mustangs remained hot, taking set four 25-23, forcing a fifth and deciding set.
The teams battled back and forth in the fifth set before the Spartans took control and pulled away for the 15-10 victory.
"I am very proud of the girls," remarked NCC Head Coach
Adrian Yaguez, "I know they were very excited for this match ... Montgomery is obviously the bar-setter in this conference having won the Region XIX championship last year .... we knew they would be tough, and they were. I think it was somewhat difficult for our girls because they had not really been challenged all season, but tonight was a great match between two equally talented teams."
Kelly Yagerhofer recorded 14 kills and 10 digs and
Anna Domyan had 11 kills, 4 aces and 17 digs for the Spartans.
Northampton improves to 7-0 overall and 7-0 in Region XIX and conference play.
Montgomery falls to 3-1 overall.
Alyssa Haderthauer and
Lindsey Kizer combined for 28 digs and sophomore Megan Granite notched 10 kills for NCC.
Northampton returns to action on Saturday when they travel to Wilkes Barre, PA to face Manor College and host Luzerene County Community College in a tri-match.
