BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton Volleyball team won both matches of their tri-match on Saturday, downing 10th ranked Fashion Institute of Technology, 3-2, and Middlesex County College, 3-0, to remain undefeated and improve to 4-0 on the season.
The first match of the day pitted two nationally-ranked opponents, as 10th ranked Fashion Institute of Technology (NY) paid a visit to the Arthur L. Scott Spartan Center to face the Spartans who received votes in the latest NJCAA Division III poll. The match lived up to its billing, as the two heavy weights battled through five grueling games, with FIT taking game one 28-26, followed by Northampton taking game two 25-18 and game three 25-15. FIT roared back to win game four 25-22, setting up a thrilling 5th and decisive game, which the Spartans took 15-10 to earn the 3-2 victory.
Anna Domyan (Bethlehem Catholic) led Northampton with 19 kills and recorded 12 digs, while freshman
Emily Koehler (Northampton) had 14 kills and 2 blocks.
"It was a great match," quipped Head Coach
Adrian Yaguez, "Fashion came in here ranked 10th in the country, undefeated ... including a 3-0 win over 8th ranked Howard Community College of Maryland ... I think the girls proved to themselves today that they can play with the best in the country and deserve to ranked among those teams."
NCC faced Middlesex County College in their second match and quickly dispatched the Colts, winning 25-8, 25-11, 25-15.
Samantha Bertasavage recorded 6 kills, 1 ace and 2 digs, while
Barbara Dimon added 9 kills, 3 aces and 1 block to pace Northampton.
Ashley McCauley (Bethlehem Catholic) finished the day with 69 assists, including 45 in the Fashion Institute match.
Northampton, now 4-0 overall, 2-0 in conference play and 1-0 in Region XIX, returns to action on September 10th when they travel to Lehigh Carbon Community College for a 7pm match at Berrier Hall.
