Spartans Down Undefeated Monroe to Capture Cara Bryant Memorial Tournament

SYRACUSE, NY - After losing their first match of the season to Monroe Community College in pool play at Onondaga Community College on Saturday, the Northampton volleyball team bounced back and ran through the single elimination playoff portion of the tournament, including knocking off undefeated Monroe in the championship match, to capture their second consecutive Cara Bryant Memorial Tournament title.

Emily Koehler won MVP honors for the second consecutive year and Jax Babezki was named to the All-Tournament Team as Northampton went 6-1 during the two-day event.  After defeating Onondaga and Delhi on Friday night, the Spartans downed Jefferson Community College 25-16, 25-16 in their first match on Saturday.  The win set up a showdown of undefeated teams as the 6th ranked Spartans at 30-0 faced off vs. 5th ranked Monroe at 26-0.  The Tribunes gave Northampton their first loss of the season, winning 25-23 and 25-19. 

Northampton received the #2 seed for the tournament playoff bracket and defeated 7th seeded Delhi, 25-4, 25-17 to move on to the semifinals vs. Onondaga Community College.  Onondaga, the 6th seed, upset 3rd seeded Broome, thus setting up another rematch for the Spartans.  Northampton made short work of the Lazers, winning 25-8, 25-10 to advance to the finals against Monroe.

Monroe entered the championship with a record of 29-0, while the Spartans entered at 32-1. The Tribunes took the first set by the exact margin of their first matchup, 25-23.  Northampton rebounded to dominate play in the second set, winning 25-10 to set the stage for a winner take all third set.  Northampton took an early lead at 8-5 and clinched their second consecutive tournament title with a 15-10 victory, while handing Monroe their first loss of the season.  In the championship match, Koehler had 14 kills and 3 digs, while Babezki added 9 kills, Olivia Bobyak recorded 12 digs and Anona Bauman registered 27 assists.
