SYRACUSE, NY - The Northampton women's volleyball team opened the Cara Bryant Memorial Tournament at Onondaga Community College on Friday evening with two victories, downing Jefferson Community College 2-1 and Cayuga Coummunity College 2-0.
The Spartans got all they could handle in match one vs. Jefferson, dropping the first set 25-20 and then trailing 23-21 in the second set before rallying for a 26-24 win and then taking set three 15-5 to win the best of three match.
Katrina Shelly (Mountville, PA /Hempfield ) had 16 kills and 13 digs,
Emily Petrat (Bethlehem, PA /Freedom ) recorded 8 kills,
Alysce Molchan (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame - Green Pond ) notched 29 assists and 8 digs and
Megan Crimi (Nazareth, PA /Notre Dame - Green Pond ) had 9 digs to lead Northampton. Jefferson Community College fell to 20-3 overall with the loss.
The second match of the tournament wasn't quite as tight, as the Spartans downed Cayuga 25-7 and 25-14.
Katrina Shelly (Mountville, PA /Hempfield ) had 7 kills and 12 digs,
Rachael Caywood (Bath, PA/Nazareth ) added 3 kills and
Kalli Walling (Saylorsburg, PA /Pleasant Valley) had 6 digs to pace Northampton. Cayuga drops to 7-17 with the loss.
The Spartans, now 21-1 overall, will face Onondaga Community College on Saturday morning at 9am and then will face Monroe Community College at 11am before the single elimination playoff begins.
