NEWTOWN, Pa. - In a game that saw a 28 point swing and a buzzer beater to send it to overtime, Coach
Brennan McCarthy and his Spartans will take the "W" and head back to Bethlehem.
"Give Bucks credit," commented McCarthy, "they never gave up. We were up 13 in the first half and with just over 9 minutes remaining in the game, they had a 7 point lead. They were able to convert some big 3's in the second half, but I'm really happy with how my guys responded to the adversity and came up big in the overtime period and outscored them 15-7 ...we could have dropped our heads, but we responded in a positive manner and picked up a crucial road win."
Tied at 62-62,
Carlos Gutierrez (Allentown, Pa./William Allen ) had tip-in with 43 seconds remaining to give the Spartans the lead at 64-62. Gutierrez converted 1 of 2 free throws with 10 seconds remaining to put Northampton up 65-62 before Adjewada Sanoumega (10 points) hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime, tied at 65.Â
The Spartans were able to control the overtime period and escape with an 80-72 victory.Â
Jay Davis (Northwest, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) led the Spartans with 22 points and also hauled down 13 rebounds, Gutierrez chipped in with 15 points, while
Isiah Hinton-Gray (Allentown, Pa./William Allen ) and
Elijah Barrett (Harrisburg, Pa. /Harrisburg) each recorded double-doubles, with Hinton-Gray going for 14 points 13 rebounds and Barrett notching 12 points and 16 boards.Â
The Spartans outrebounded Bucks 64-33 and held them to 32% shooting from the field, but only managed to shoot 32% themselves, including a 3 for 21 effort from behind the arc (14%).Â
Northampton improves to 16-2 overall, 12-1 in Region XIX and 10-1 in the EPAC.Â
Bucks falls to 8-11 overall, 6-10 in Region XIX and 6-6 in conference.Â
The Spartans return back home to face Harrisburg Area Community College on Tuesday evening at 7pm.Â
