Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Spartans Top Philadelphia in Thriller to Advance to Final Four

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Jay Davis (Northwest, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) scored with 2 seconds remaining to give the Northampton men's basketball team a 76-74 victory over the Community College of Philadelphia in the Region XIX quarterfinals on Tuesday night at the Arthur L. Scott Center.

The Colonials, who trailed by as many as 16 in the second half, tied the game at 74 on a 3-pointer by Blair Bowes with 27 seconds remaining in the contest, setting the stage for Davis' heroics.

"We drew up a play earlier in the game in case we needed it" remarked Head Coach Brennan McCarthy, "and give the guys credit, they ran it to perfection ... Jay made a great move and was able to convert."

Davis finished with 25 points, while Isiah Hinton-Gray (Allentown, Pa./William Allen ) 16 and Arnel Lewis (Easton, Pa. /Easton) 11 joined him in double-figures.

Northampton led 44-29 at the half, after shooting a blistering 18 of 36 from the floor, including 5 of 7 from 3-point range.  The second was a different story, as Philadelphia limited the Spartans to 36% shooting, including only 1 of 5 from distance, outscoring the Spartans 45-32.

The Spartans were able to hold the Colonials to under 40% shooting for the game (39%) and won the rebounding battle 43-36.

Hinton-Gray, who led the Spartans off the backboards with 13 rebounds, broke the career rebounding record of 679 held by Wayne Stewart (1990-92).  Hinton-Gray needed 10 rebounds to break the 26 year-old record, and now has 682 rebounds for his career.

The win propels Northampton (23-6) to the NJCAA Region XIX Final Four on Saturday at the Spartan Center, where they will face the #1 seed and #1 ranked team in the country, Brookdale Community College (29-0) at 5pm.
