Basketball Season Set to Tip-Off Tuesday

11/1/2021 5:19:00 PM

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's and women's basketball teams will return to regular season action for the first time since February 13, 2020 when they host Prince George's Community College on Tuesday evening at the Arthur L. Scott Spartan Center.

The women's game, slated to tip at 5pm, will be mark the debut of Head Coach Terrence Bomar. Bomar was named the Head Coach at Northampton on April 3, 2020.  A highly successful basketball coach in the Lehigh Valley and Poconos area, Bomar served as an assistant coach at NJCAA Division II Lackawanna College from 2016-18, head girls basketball coach at East Stroudsburg North from 2012 thru 2016 and as an assistant at Dieruff from 2010 - 2012.

The women's team is coming off a 9-12 season in 2019-20, which saw them miss the Region 19 playoffs.  Bomar has reloaded, with 15 players on his roster, with Briona McClain (Tobyhanna, PA/Pocono Mt. West ) as the only returner from Alyssa Bonenberger's 2019-20 squad.

Bomar will look to utilize a high-octane offense and an in-your-face defensive philosophy to lead the Spartans back to the Region 19 playoffs.

On the men's side, veteran mentor Brennan McCarthy returns to the sidelines for his 7th season (the Spartans did not compete in 2020-21), with an overall record of 112-57 (66%) and a conference mark of 72-26 (77%).  The Spartans finished the 2019-20 season with an overall record of 25-4, falling in the Region 19 semi-finals.  Northampton claimed its 3rd EPAC title under McCarthy in 2019-20, finishing 12-2 in conference play.

Kymir Roper (Upper Darby, PA/Upper Darby,) and Union Burns (Mt. Pocono, PA/Pocono Mt. West ), the only two returners from the nationally-ranked 2019-20 squad, will have 17 other new faces joining them in the orange and black this season, as McCarthy looks to add another title to his resume.

Both games will be live-streamed on the Northampton Sports Network and the Region 19 Sports Network.
