11/30/2021 9:56:00 PM

Box Score PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The 12th ranked Northampton men's basketball team picked up a big road win on Tuesday evening, downing the Community College of Philadelphia, 77-75 at the CCP Athletic Center.

In what can only be described as a "typical Philadelphia vs. Northampton game," Erron Archie (Reading, PA /Muhlenberg) drilled two free throws with 5 seconds remaining to give Northampton a 77-73 lead and the Lions scored at the buzzer to make the final margin two points.  The two EPAC rivals have now split their last 12 match-ups.

The game was tied at 69 with 1:44 remaining, when Northampton hit two free throws to go up 71-69 with 1:14 left in the contest.  After a CCP miss and a Northampton turnover, the Spartans were able to get a steal and score to take a 4-point lead at 73-69 with 32 seconds remaining. CCP was able to draw a foul on the next play and converted 1 of 2 free throws, but was able to get an offensive rebound on the miss and draw another foul.  The Lions converted both of their free throws to make the score 73-72 with 22 seconds remaining.  After a timeout, the Spartans were able to break the CCP press and Zykir Williams (Philadelphia, PA/Boys Latin Charter ) scored an uncontested layup for a 75-72 advantage with 9 seconds remaining.  Up by 3, Northampton intentionally fouled the Lions, and they converted 1 of 2 free throws to make it 75-73 Northampton.  Archie then got fouled with 5 seconds remaining and drilled his two clutch free throws to put the game out of reach.

Mel Copeland (Allentown, PA/William Allen) led Northampton with 23 points, including five 3-pointers, while Archie finished with 9, which included a perfect 7 of 7 from the charity stripe.

Michael Marable (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna Twp.) added 17 points, Amyr Fox (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin East ) chipped in with 12 points and 10 assists and Zykir Williams (Philadelphia, PA/Boys Latin Charter ) hauled down 14 rebounds to pace the Spartans.

Northampton finished with 28 field goals (8 3-pointers) and was 13 of 18 from the line.  Philadelphia had 25 field goals (8 3-pointers) and was 17 of 27 from the line.

"Great team win," remarked Coach Brennan McCarthy, "any win on the road is huge, but when you get a win here in Philly, you know you have earned it."

Northampton, ranked 12th in the latest NJCAA poll, improves to 7-2 overall, 3-1 in Region 19 and 2-1 in the EPAC.

Philadelphia falls to 2-5 overall, 2-2 in Region 19 and 2-2 in conference play.

Northampton will look to extend their winning streak to three games when they host Sussex County Community College on Thursday evening at 7pm.

The Spartan men's soccer team will be honored at halftime for capturing the EPAC Championship earlier this year.
