Huge Second Half Propels Northampton Past Ocean

12/11/2022 7:10:00 PM

Box Score TOMS RIVER, NJ - The 7th ranked Northampton men's basketball team overcame a 12-point second half deficit, outscoring Ocean County College 53 to 28, to rally, and down the Vikings 85-72 on Saturday afternoon at the Health and Human Performance Center.

Trailing 44-32 at halftime, Head Coach Brennan McCarthy switched to a smaller, guard-oriented lineup, which applied full-court defensive pressure throughout the second half, to spark the comeback.

The Spartans took the lead, at 71-69, with just over 4 minutes remaining in the game, and then outscored their hosts 14-3 over the final 4 minutes of the contest.

"We made the decision to switch things up a little on the defensive end during halftime," remarked McCarthy, "I thought Ocean was dictating the tempo in the first half and we needed to do something to regain momentum.  The full-court pressure really energized us and I couldn't be prouder of how hard the guys played, especially given we were playing our 3 road game in 4 days."

CJ Miles (Bangor, PA/Bangor) led the Spartans with 18 points, with 15 of them coming in the decisive second half, while Keenan Roberts (Harrisburg, PA/Central Dauphin) added 18, Mike Marable (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna) had 14 and Keein Ward (Harrisburg, PA/Susquehanna) scored 11.

The win moves Northampton to 11-2 overall and 7-1 in Region 19.

Ocean falls to 3-5 overall and 3-5 in Region 19.

The Spartans wrap up the fall semester on Tuesday when they host Camden County College at 7pm.
