LINCROFT, NJ - Trailing 10-9 entering the bottom of the 9th inning, the Brookdale Jersey Blues scored two runs on a solo homerun, a double and a line drive single to center to down Northampton 11-10 on Wednesday afternoon at BCC Stadium.
Northampton jumped out to a 5-1 lead entering the bottom of the 5th, when the Jersey Blues put 5 runs on the board to take a 6-5 lead. Northampton tied the game at 6 with a run in the 6th and extended the lead to 8-6 after the top of the 8th, only to see Brookdale rally once again, plating 3 runs in the bottom of the 8th to take a 9-8 lead. The Spartans responded with 2 runs in the top of the 9th, behind singles from
Josh Herman (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond),
Caleb Walker (Deposit, NY/Deposit Central (NY)) and and
Michael Wambold (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)), to regain the lead 10-9, setting the stage for Janai Vaughn's dramatic walk-off single, which scored Shawn O'Hea, giving Brookdale the 11-10 win.
Jeffrey Sabater (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) led Northampton with a 3 for 3 effort at the plate with 3 walks, 3 RBI and 3 stolen bases.
Ryan Santangelo (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) added 2 RBI with a 2 for 5 performance and
Josh Herman (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) finished 4 for 5 with a RBI.
Jake Black (Bethlehem, PA/Elizabethtown Area ) took the loss in relief, finishing with 0.1 innings pitched, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits.
Cole McGourty (Asbury, NJ/Voorhees (NJ)) was the starter for Northampton, lasting 4.2 innings, allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 6 hits with 2 strikeouts and walks.
Ashton Johnson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) worked the middle 3.1 innings, allowing 3 runs (none earned) on 1 hit.
Sabater's 3 steals give him 22 for the season, setting a new Northampton single-season record.
The loss drops Northampton to 27-7 overall and 3-3 in Region 19.
Brookdale improves to 24-17 overall and 12-8 in the Region.
The Spartans are back in action on Thursday when they host Division II Mercer County Community College at 3:30pm.
