BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The 4th seeded Northampton Baseball team used two outstanding pitching performances to sweep 5th seeded Bergen Community College in their quarterfinal best of 3 series on Saturday, winning game one 10-2 and game two 10-0.
Game One - Northampton 10 | Bergen 2
In game one, the Spartans jumped out to an early 7-2 lead after 2 innings and cruised to a run-rule shortened 10-2 victory over 5th seeded Bergen.
Leading 2-1 entering the bottom of the 2nd, the Spartans loaded the bases with a hit-by-pitch and two walks, setting the table for
Michael Wambold (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)) who laced a 2-run single, scoring
Alex Kok (Newmarket, ON - Canada/) and
Max Rivas (Toms River, NJ/Toms River - South (NJ)).
Ryan Santangelo (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) then hit a 3-run bomb, scoring
Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan (NJ)) and and Wambold, to give the Spartans the 7-2 advantage.
The 5-run lead was more than enough for starter
Ashton Johnson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) who threw a complete game 6-hitter, striking out 3 and walking 2.
Santangelo finished 1 for 4 with 3 RBI,
Luke Spencer (Dallas, PA/Lake-Lehman) was 2 for 4 with a double and 2 RBI and
Alex Kok (Newmarket, ON - Canada/) was 1 for 3 with a homerun and 2 runs scored to lead Northampton at the plate.
Game Two - Northampton 10 | Bergen 0
Ryan Gordon (New Cumberland, PA/Red Land) put on a show in game two, throwing a complete game no-hitter to clinch the series for the Spartans. Gordon went 6 innings, striking out 7 and walking just 1 en route to the no-no.
After a scoreless 1st inning, the Spartans scored 2 runs in the 2nd inning and then added 5 in the 3rd, highlighted by a 3-run homerun from
Isaiah Lockette (Steelton, PA/Steelton-Highspire) and a solo shot from
Garrett Garofalo (Willow Grove, PA/Upper Moreland) to make the score 7-0.
The Spartans added 2 in the 5th and 1 in the 6th to earn their second run-rule shortened victory of the day.
Northampton improves to 34-10 overall with the two wins and advances to their 9th NJCAA Region 19 Final Four since 2010. The Spartans will face #1 seed RCSJ-Gloucester on Friday in Sewell, NJ.
The playoff series win is Northampton's 5th in 6 series' vs. Bergen and they improve to 19-7 all-time vs the Bulldogs.
