VINELAND, NJ - The Northampton Baseball season came to end on Friday evening with a 2-1 loss to 2nd seeded RCSJ-Cumberland in the loser's bracket of the Region 19 Division III Tournament.
Northampton's
Ryan Gordon (New Cumberland, PA/Red Land) and Cumberland's Andrew Simone staged a classic pitcher's duel, each throwing a complete game, with Gordon going 8 innings, allowing 3 runs on 9 hits, striking out 6 and walking 1. Simone went 9 innings, giving up just 1 run in the 1st inning, on 6 hits, with 3 strikeouts and 1 free pass.
Northampton plated a run in the top of the 1st as
Jake Hendershot (Martinsville, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan (NJ)) led off the game with a double, followed by a
Jeffrey Sabater (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) single. Sabater got caught stealing second, but
Ryan Santangelo (Oxford, PA/Oxford Area) walked, followed by a
Isaiah Lockette (Steelton, PA/Steelton-Highspire) single to center, which scored Hendershot.
After a scoreless 1st inning, the Dukes were able to push across 2 runs in the bottom 2nd with 5 singles and a wild pitch. Jack Peacock, Will Gamble, John Lockhart, Casey Vaughn and Kevin Merrone each singled for Cumberland, with Lockhart and Vaughn each picking up a RBI to give the Dukes a 2-1 lead.
Both teams went scoreless over the next 7 innings, with only 7 total hits during that time frame (3 - Northampton / 4- Cumberland) to allow the 2nd seeded Dukes to advance with the 2-1 victory.
Hendershot finished 2 for 5 with a run scored, Sabater was 2 for 3 and Lockette went 1 for 4 with a RBI to lead Northampton.
Merrone, Maiers and Lockhart each had 2 hits for Cumberland.
The loss eliminates the #4 seed Spartans from the tournament and ends their season at 34-12.
Cumberland will now advance to Saturday to face the loser of the Brookdale vs. RCSJ-Gloucester contest.
