Baseball Drops Top-10 Battle to RCSJ-Gloucester

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BETHLEHEM, Pa. - In a NJCAA national top-ten battle, 10th ranked Northampton dropped both ends of a doubleheader to #3 RCSJ-Gloucester on Sunday afternoon, falling 12-4 in game one and 10-8 in 8 innings in game two. 

GAME ONE - Lost 12-4
In game one, the 3rd ranked Roadrunners jumped out to a 12-0 lead before the Spartans scored 4 runs in the bottom of the 5th.  RCSJ-Gloucester chased starter Ashton Johnson (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) after 3 innings, during which he allowed 6 runs on 7 hits, striking out 2 and walking 1.  Daniel McEvoy (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) took the mound in relief, working 2 innings, allowing 6 runs on 5 hits.  Jagger Martinez (Newport Beach, CA/Rockwall-Heath (TX)) and Ethan Ferraro (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) finished off the final 2 innings.  Spartan pitchers combined to allow 12 runs on 12 hits with 3 strikeouts and 4 walks.

Jeffrey Sabater (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) led the Northampton offense with a 2 for 3 effort with an RBI and a run scored.  Roadrunner pitching limited Northampton to just 5 hits.

GAME TWO - Lost 10-8 (8 innings)
The nationally-ranked foes battled through 6 innings, with Northampton leading 3-1 entering the top of the 7th inning, but a Rob Brezezniak 2-run homerun tied the game for RCSJ-Gloucester, and eventually sent the game to extra innings, after the Spartans went scoreless in the bottom of the 7th. 

The Roadrunners then scored 7 runs in the top of the 8th, but Northampton responded with 5 runs of their own in the bottom of half of the 8th, but it wasn't enough, as the Spartans fell 10-8. 

Austin Beard (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) took the loss in relief of Ryan Gordon (New Cumberland, PA/Red Land), who went 7 innings, striking out 8. 

Gabe Caso (Califon, NJ/West Morris Central (NJ)) was 2 for 4 with a double, Josh Herman (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) had 2 RBI and Shane Fillman (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) finished 2 for 5 with 3 runs scored to pace the Spartan offense, which finished with 12 hits. 

The loss drops Northampton to 11-6 overall and 3-4 in Region 19. 

RCSJ-Gloucester is now 16-4 overall and 5-0 in the Region.

Northampton and the Roadrunners still have one game left of their 3-game series to make-up, no date has yet been set. 

The Spartans are back in action Tuesday when they host Middlesex College in game one of their three game series.  The 9-inning contest is scheduled for 3:30pm.
