Spartans Clinch Series Win Over Middlesex

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 EDISON, NJ - The 13th ranked Northampton baseball team clinched their Region 19 series vs. Middlesex College, downing the Colts in game two 5-3, before dropping game three, 6-0, on Wednesday afternoon.  The Spartans won game one of the series on Tuesday in dramatic fashion, scoring two runs in the bottom of the 9th to earn a 6-5 comeback win. 

GAME TWO - Won 5-3
Ethan Woods (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) earned the win for Northampton, improving to 2-1 on the season.  Woods threw a complete game 7-hitter, allowing 3 runs (2 earned) while striking out 7 and walking 2. 

The Spartans, who led 3-0 after 3 innings, extended their lead to 4-0 in the 4th inning when Cole McGourty (Asbury, NJ/Voorhees (NJ)) launched a solo homerun, Middlesex cut the deficit to 4-2, before each team tacked on a run in the 7th, to make the final, 5-3. 

Jeffrey Sabater (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) finished 2 for 2 with 2 RBI, 2 walks and 2 runs scored, while Shane Fillman (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) went 2 for 3 with a RBI and a run scored. 

The Spartans outhit the Colts, 9 to 7. 

GAME THREE - Lost 6-0
In game three of the series, Gary Bendix of Middlesex threw a complete game shutout, holding the Spartans to 6 hits, as the Colts prevailed, 6-0. 

Patrick Flynn (Easton, PA/Notre Dame - Green Pond) took the loss for Northampton, going 5.2 innings, allowing 6 runs (5 earned) on 3 hits, with 5 walks and 3 strikeouts. 

Cole McGourty (Asbury, NJ/Voorhees (NJ)) led the offense with 2 hits, including a double. 

The doubleheader split on Wednesday puts Northampton at 13-7 overall and 5-5 in Region 19. 

Middlesex moves to 14-10 overall and 3-9 in Region play. 

The Spartans return to Region 19 action on Friday when they travel to Lincroft, NJ to face nationally-ranked Brookdale Community College in game one of their three game series.  Game time for the single 9-inning matchup is set for 3:30pm.
