Offense Leads Northampton Past Lehigh Carbon

SCHNECKSVILLE, Pa. - The Northampton baseball team, ranked 11th in the latest NJCAA poll, won their 6th consecutive game on Tuesday afternoon, downing NJCAA Division II Lehigh Carbon Community College, 13-9, at Cougar Park. 

The Spartans jumped out of the gate early, plating 2 runs in the top of the 1st inning behind a RBI triple from Cole McGourty (Asbury, NJ/Voorhees (NJ)) and a RBI double from Stephen McMillan (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks - South).  

The Cougars responded with a run in the bottom half of the 1st and then added 4 runs in the 4th to take a 5-2 lead into the 5th inning. 

Northampton added a run in the 5th off a sacrifice fly from Shane Fillman (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall), which scored Jeffrey Sabater (Lansdale, PA/North Penn), cutting the deficit to 5-3. 

The Spartans opened the floodgates in the 6th, scoring 6 runs to take a 9-5 lead.  Sabater had a 2 run single, while Josh Herman (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond), Fillman and McMillan each had a RBI in the inning. 

Sabater and McGourty finished off the scoring for Northampton in the 7th, with a RBI double and a RBI single, respectively. 

Ryan Gordon (New Cumberland, PA/Red Land) picked up the win in relief, going 2.2 innings, allowing no runs on no hits, with 5 strikeouts and 2 walks. 

Daniel McEvoy (Kunkletown, PA/Pleasant Valley) started for the Spartans and worked 3 innings, allowing 1 run on 5 hits with 3 K's and 2 walks. 

McMillian finished 3 for 6 with 3 RBI, McGourty was 3 for 5 with 3 RBI, Hendershot went 3 for 4 with 3 runs scored and a stolen base and Sabater added 3 hits, a double, a triple and 3 RBI, as the Spartans pounded out 18 hits. 

The win moves Northampton to 19-9 overall, while LCCC falls to 7-18.

The Spartans are now 18-0 all-time vs. Lehigh Carbon since joining the NJCAA. 

Next up for Northampton is a 3-game series vs. RCSJ-Cumberland.  Game one is set for Friday at Northampton, first pitch is scheduled for 3:30pm.
