Baseball Drops Drops DH, Loses Series to Cumberland

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 VINELAND, NJ - The 11th ranked Northampton baseball team dropped both ends a doubleheader on Saturday vs. RCSJ-Cumberland, falling 4-3 and 11-8 in games two and three of their Region 19 series.

GAME ONE - Lost 4-3
 In a pitching duel between Northampton's Jake Black (Bethlehem, PA/Elizabethtown) and Cumberland's Ian Beebe, the Dukes were able to hold off the Spartans for the 4-3 victory. 

Black took the hard-luck loss, going 6 innings, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits, striking out 5 and walking 3.  Beebe earned the win with 7 innings of work, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits with 5 K's and 2 free passes. 

The Dukes scored 3 runs in the bottom half of the 3rd to take a 3-1 lead, but the Spartans rallied with 2 in the 6th, but Beebe was able to close the door on the Spartan bats in the 7th to earn the win.

Stephen McMillan (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks - South) was 2 for 3 with 1 RBI and Josh Herman (Bethlehem, PA/Notre Dame Green Pond) was 1 for 3 with a RBI to lead Northampton. 

GAME TWO - Lost 11-8
After scoring two runs in the top of the 1st, the Spartan offense went cold and they found themselves down 7-2 after 4 innings.  Both offenses opened up in the 5th, with Northampton scoring 2 runs and Cumberland adding 4 to extend their lead to 11-4 after 5.

The Spartans would add 4 runs in the top of the 6th to close the gap, but it would not be enough, as Northampton fell 11-8. 

Ethan Woods (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) took the loss, going 4 innings, allowing 7 runs on 7 hits with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk.  Austin Beard (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) worked 1 inning in relief, allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits with 1 strikeout.  Matt Burnett (Effort, PA/Pleasant Valley) tossed a scoreless 6th.

Gabe Caso (Califon, NJ/West Morris Central (NJ)) collected 3 hits, Shane Fillman (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) was 2 for 4 and Stephen McMillan (Warrington, PA/Central Bucks - South) went 2 for 4 with a double and a RBI. 

The doubleheader sweep drops Northampton to 19-12 overall and 7-10 in Region 19.

Cumberland improves to 14-16 overall and 11-9 in Region play.

The Spartans are back at home on Sunday as they host Atlantic Cape Community College at 2pm in game three of their series.  The Spartans won games one and two back on February 26th.
