2/25/2024 9:01:00 PM

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 STROUDSBURG, Pa. - The 12th ranked Northampton Baseball team picked up a season-opening sweep on Sunday at Creekview Park, downing 13th ranked Kingsborough Community College 11-6 in game one and 5-4 in the nightcap.

GAME ONE - Won 11-6
The Spartans jumped out to a 10-3 lead after 3 innings in game one and cruised to an 11-6 victory in their opening game of the 2024 campaign.

Austin Beard (Lebanon, PA/Cedar Crest) earned the win, going 4 innings, allowing 5 hits, 6 runs (3 earned), while walking 1 and striking out 4.  Ben Mostosky (Saylorsburg, PA/Pleasant Valley) pitched the final 3 innings in relief, allowing no runs on 3 hits, fanning 2.

Alexander Ruiz (Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey) and Gabe Caso (Califon, NJ/West Morris Central (NJ)) led the Spartans at the plate, with Ruiz finishing 2 for 3 with 3 runs scored, a walk and 2 RBI, while Caso was 2 for 4 with 2 RBI.

The Wave outhit Northampton 8 to 6, but the Spartan batters showed great patience at the plate, drawing 10 walks.

GAME TWO - Won 5-4
Northampton jumped out quickly again in game two, putting 5 runs on the board in the bottom of the 1st, but those would be the only runs the Spartans would score as they held on for the 5-4 victory.

Despite the offense slowing down after the 1st inning, the Spartan pitchers were able to hold the Wave in check, as starter Ethan Woods (Hummelstown, PA/Lower Dauphin) and relievers Gavin Panovec (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth) and Logan Magdits (Nazareth, PA/Pen Argyl) combined to limit Kingsborough to just 4 runs on 8 hits, striking out 12 and walking 3.  Woods went 5 innings, allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with 9 K's.

Braden Cummings (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) had a homerun for the Spartans, while Brody Hinkle (Wrightsville, PA/Eastern York) went 1 for 4 with a walk and 2 RBI.  The Spartans were once again outhit, 8 to 6, but drew 6 walks.

"Overall, very happy to be outside playing baseball in February," remarked Head Coach Adrian Yaguez, "that being said, glad to pick up two wins, but definitely a number of areas to work on as we prepare to head South later this week for our Spring Trip."

The two victories put Northampton at 2-0 overall, while Kingsborough falls to 0-4 on the season.
