Wrestling Competes at Nassau Open Tournament

GARDEN CITY, NY - The Northampton Wrestling team traveled to Garden City, NY in Long Island on Saturday morning to take part in the 2025 Nassau Open Tournament at the George B. Costigan PE Complex Field House on the campus of Nassau Community College.

The Spartans saw several wrestlers put in a good showing at the Nassau Open with some key individual victories as the team wrapped up wrestling action for the Fall 2025 semester. Sydnei Jones Proctor (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) collected a second place finish in the Female 180lb. Bracket for the Spartans.

"Great opportunity for our wrestlers today," commented Spartans Head Coach Nick Haegele, "It was a long day but well worth the trip and the opportunity to get out on the mat against wrestlers from all over the east coast. This gives is a good measure of where we are and what we need to do to keep improving and moving forward. I felt our wrestlers battled on the mats today. This was a positive experience and something we can continue to grow and build on."

Derek Cruz (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty), wrestling at 141lbs. went 2-2, with a win by Fall over Bronson Branch of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute at 1:57. Cruz also defeated Justin Muller of Springfield Technical Community College by Fall at 1:32.

Jibreel Fairoz (Orefield, PA/Parkland) was 2-2 at 141lbs. with a Fall over Armenak Amirkhanyan from Bergen Community College at 2:50. Fairoz also defeated Bronson Branch from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute by Major Decision, 15-2.

Xavier Arner (Schnecksville, PA/Whitehall) wrestled at 157lbs. and finished 3-2 on the day. Arner collected a 4-2 Decision over Arcangelo Losee from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institue and also picked up a Technical Fall win (21-4) over Anthony Coccarelli from Hunter College at 6:04. Arner defeated James Dean from University of Connecticut Wrestling with a 10-3 Decision.

Kristopher Xian (Pottstown, PA/Pottsgrove Area) was 2-2 at 157lbs. with a victory by Fall at 1:06 over Isaiah Harris from Hunter College. Xian also defeated Ansh Mariano from Stony Brook Wrestling at 1:42 by Fall.

Shane Stankina (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) at 157lbs. was 1-2 with a victory over Michael Gim of Bergen Community College by Fall at 1:05.

The Spartans will be back on the mat after the holiday break in dual action on Saturday, January 24th when they travel to Scranton, PA to take on the University of Scranton at the John Long Center.
