BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton baseball team scored 16 runs on 16 hits to defeat Union College of New Jersey, 16 to 8, on Thursday afternoon at Spartan Park, in game one of their 3-game Region 19 series.
Shane Henrick (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) had 3 hits, including 2 doubles, to lead six Spartans with multiple hits on the day.
Lincoln Hower (Kintnersville, PA/Faith Christian) and
Braden Cummings (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown) each knocked in 3 runs and
Cody Miller (Oxford, NJ/Warren Hills (NJ)) finished 2 for 6 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI to pace the offense.
Aaron Clark (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) earned the win in relief of
Jared Diefenbach (Stewartsville, NJ/Phillipsburg (NJ)), holding the Owls scoreless over the final 4 innings, striking out 6. Diefenbach earned a no decision after allowing 8 runs on 8 hits over 4.2 innings of work.
The Spartans put the game away with 5 runs in the 7th, highlighted by 3-run double off the bat of
Braden Cummings (Elizabethtown, PA/Elizabethtown).
Northampton improves to 21-18 overall and 15-13 in Region 19.
Union falls to 11-24 overall and 7-21 in the Region.
Games two and three have been moved to Monday May 5th at Kean University, with starting times slated for 3:00pm and 6:00pm.
