Baseball Tops PSU Beaver in Spring Trip Finale, 10-7

MYRTLE BEACH, SC - The Northampton Baseball team picked up a 10-7 win over PSU Beaver on Thursday to wrap up their Spring Trip at the Ripken Baseball Complex.

Freshman pitcher Matt McGaughey (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) (1-0) picked up the win on the mound, firing 4 innings, allowing only 1 run and 1 hit and striking out 3 batters. Ben Moretz (Allentown, PA/William Allen) came on in relief in the fifth inning and fanned 3 without allowing a hit. Sam Erschen (Northampton, PA/Northampton) and Nate Unger (Allentown, PA/Parkland) followed Moretz in relief to close out the game.

The Spartans had 10 hits with 4 extra-base hits and 6 stolen bases. Josh Brancy (Sparta. NJ/Sparta (NJ)) was 2-3 with 3 runs scored and an RBI including a double and stolen base. Shane Henrick (Blue Bell, PA/Wissahickon) was 2-4 with an RBI and a double and Tyler Reichenbach (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) was 2-4 with a double and 2 RBI and a stolen base. Joey Richards (Bath, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) was 1-1 with a pinch hit double.

"Good week of baseball for us," explained Spartans Head Coach Adrian Yaguez, "We got off to a bit of a slow start in the early part of the week but felt we started to put it together in the last few days. This is a great opportunity to see some things in the early going, play good competition in nice weather, and get our season started. We are very grateful for this opportunity and ready to get home and back into our routine."

The Spartans went 5-5 during their 10 game stretch at the Ripken Experience and are 6-5 overall to start the season.

Northampton, who received votes in the NJCAA National Poll earlier this week, will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Carneys Point, NJ to open their 3 game series with Salem Community College at 3:30pm.
