BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The 9
th ranked Northampton women's volleyball team opened their season with a pair of convincing wins on Saturday afternoon at the Arthur L. Scott Center, sweeping both Nassau Community College (NY) and Salem Community College, 3-0.
The Spartans move to 2-0 to start the season. Nassau, which received votes in the NJCAA national poll, defeated Salem earlier in the day and finished the tri match at 1-1, while Salem Community College fell to 0-2.
Match One vs Nassau Community College - Won 3-0 (25-11, 25-8, 25-8)
The Spartans topped Nassau Community College to open the day as Freshman
Amanda Rivera (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) led the offense with 13 kills, 7 digs and 6 service aces.
Kyra Miller (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) had 7 kills, 3 digs and 1 service ace and
Kornelia Wszolek (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) added 6 kills, 3 blocks, 2 digs and 6 service aces to lead the offensive attack for Northampton.
Freshman setter
Allie Keck (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) had 24 assists, 3 digs, 4 blocks and 1 service ace and
Emily Marcial (Allentown, PA/Executive Charter) controlled the back row with 14 digs and 1 service ace.
Match Two vs Salem Community College - Won 3-0 (25-4, 25-4, 25-6)
The Spartans carried their momentum into their second match of the day, dropping the Mighty Oaks of Salem Community College in 3 sets.
Amanda Rivera (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) continued her strong play with a team-high 10 kills and
Kyra Miller (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) added 6 kills and 1 dig with a service ace for the Spartans.
Kornelia Wszolek (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) recorded 4 kills and 1 service ace.
Allie Keck (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) delivered 19 assists with 3 kills and 2 service aces and
Emily Marcial (Allentown, PA/Executive Charter) led the defense with 5 digs and also added 5 service aces.
"It was good to see us get out to fast start and felt we did a nice job carrying our momentum and focus throughout both matches today," remarked Spartans Head Coach
Rachael Aquila, "I felt we were strong in several areas and in particular our serve game today. We have been putting in the work to make that a strength. Good start today."
The Spartans are now 2-0 overall and will have an 11 day break before they are back on the floor on Wednesday, September 9th at the Panther Gymnasium in Patterson, NJ against Passaic County Community College at 6pm.
