DOVER, DE - The nationally ranked Northampton women's volleyball team suffered an upset, 3-2, loss (26-24, 25-23, 24-26, 20-25, 9-15) against NJCAA Division II Delaware Tech on Monday night at the DTCC Sports Complex.
The Spartans jumped out to a quick, 2-0, lead, taking the first set, 26-24, and following up with a, 25-23, win in the second set for the early and commanding lead. Delaware Tech stole the momentum and grabbed the 3rd set, 26-24, and pulled off wins in the 4th and 5th sets to seal the upset win.
"Hard fought match tonight and we just fell short," said Spartans Head Coach
Rachael Aquila, "We knew we were going to have a tough match tonight but we had the momentum and we let it slip away. We need to do a better job of finishing. We will be fine. We just need to learn from this and get back to work tomorrow."
Amanda Rivera (Macungie, PA/Emmaus) led the Spartans with 12 kills and 10 digs and
Kornelia Wszolek (Stroudsburg, PA/Stroudsburg) added 9 kills and 12 digs.
Sophia Tyma (Bethlehem, PA/Lehigh Valley Academy) chipped in with 8 kills and 2 blocks in the loss.
Allie Keck (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) recorded 28 assists and 13 digs.
Quinn Micheli (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) delivered 1 service ace and 9 digs.
Northampton, ranked 15th in the most recent NJCAA national poll, slips to 3-2 overall.
Delaware Tech improves to 4-4 overall with the win.
The Spartans are back on the floor on Monday, September 21st when they again battle NJCAA Division II Delaware Tech at 6pm at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
