Men's Soccer Falls at Home to Middlesex

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's soccer team fell 5-1 to Middlesex College in Region 19 action on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field.

Middlesex opened the scoring at the 20 minute mark of the first half when Samuel Rodriguez scored off a cross to put the Colts ahead, 1-0. The Spartans tied the score at, 1-1, when Middlesex inadvertently scored an own goal on a defensive miscue at 35 minutes.

Samuel Rodriguez answered for the Colts with his second goal of the half, scoring an unassisted with just 2 minutes remaining before the intermission, as Middlesex regained the lead heading into the locker room, 2-1.

"Felt we played well in the first half and had some chances and just couldn't break through," explained Spartans Head Coach Mario Barrantes, "We had two lapses that ended up as goals and that hurt us. We got back in the game at 1-1 with the own goal and that was a credit to the pressure that I felt we were bringing on offense. But, bottom line, we had some more breakdowns on defense and Middlesex made us pay with three second half scores to put the game away."

Middlesex added three second half goals, two via penalty kick, which would seal the 5-1 win for the Colts.

Martin Severo (Allentown, PA/William Allen) faced 12 shots and made 7 saves for Northampton.

Northampton slips to 1-4-2 overall with the loss and 1-4-2 in Region 19.

Middlesex College is now 5-1-1 overall and 4-1-1 in the Region.

Northampton is back in action on Tuesday, September 22nd when they host the Titans of County College of Morris at 4pm at Spartan Field.
