Rick Wilmott just completed his third season as Head Coach of the Spartan Softball program. Hired on May 17, 2019, Wilmott had to endure the cancellation of the 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic and then guided the Spartans through a challenging 2021 campaign, that was still engulfed in COVID cancellations and protocols. Wilmott led the Spartans to a 9-13 record, which was punctuated by his first collegiate victory on March 27th vs. Middlesex College.
The 2022 season brought a slight semblance of normalcy as the Spartans were able to travel to South Carolina on Spring Trip and finished the regular season at 8-18 overall, including a 7-11 record in Region 19 play. Regina Bangcoro was named First Team All-Region, the first player during Wilmott's tenure to garner that honor.
A member of the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA), Coach Wilmott started coaching in 1991 at the tournament level and is currently recognized as a three-star coach by the NFCA. Wilmott is a certified CUDIT hitting instructor, which includes vision, body language and self-talk instruction in addition to swing mechanics.
Wilmott has successfully participated in many fastpitch coaching classes taught by coaches at the very highest level of the game, including: Carol Hutchinson (Michigan), Beth Torino (LSU), Bill Edwards (HOF), Heather Tarr (Washington) and Kelly Inouye-Perez (UCLA).
A former standout pitcher in his playing days, Wilmott has 3 perfect games and several no-hitters on his resume, along with having participated in ASA Nationals.
