Vargas Closing in on History

Josh Vargas drives against Raritan Valley
BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Head Coach Kevin Foley knew Josh Vargas would be good ... however he probably didn't expect the Faith Christian grad to have a chance to become the all-time leading scorer in Northampton men's basketball history.

Vargas, who scored 583 points during his freshman campaign with the Spartans, now sits only 265 points away from eclipsing the career record of 951 set by NCC Hall of Famer Richard Johnson from 1985 to 1987.

"Josh is a quiet scorer," remarked Foley, "there are nights that I am amazed when I look at the scorebook and see that he had 25 ... he does it so effortlessly and within the flow of the offense.  I knew he would be able to score at this level, but to think he has an opportunity to set the all-time scoring record at NCC is tremendous, especially given the competition we have faced in the NJCAA."

Vargas garnered 2nd team All-Region honors last season when he finished 6th in the country in scoring at 23.3ppg.

The Spartans and Vargas are off to a good start in 2010-11, with the team currently 4-3 overall and 1-1 in Region XIX and Vargas averaging 17.1ppg as part of a much more balanced offense.  "We knew Josh wouldn't have to score 25 a night this year for us to compete," commented Foley, "we definitely have more offensive talent around him this year and him just being on the floor opens up things for the other guys because our opponents know they can't leave Josh."

The Spartans travel to Union County College on November 30th for a Region XIX matchup.
