VINELAND, NJ - The NCC baseball team knew if they wanted to keep their postseason hopes alive, they needed to get two wins at Cumberland County College on Thursday. The Spartans did just that, defeating the Dukes 14-6 and 16-0.
In game one the Spartans used a 13-hit attack to plate 14 runs.
Rich Pohl and
Eric Bohem were each 3 for 4 with 2 RBI and Bohem added three runs scored.
Ed Madey improved to 2-1 allowing six runs on eight hits while striking out three.
NCC trailed 4-2 going into the top of the 5th inning before scoring five runs in the inning, sparked by a 3-run, bases clearing triple, by
Ryan Mickley. The Spartans added two runs in the 6th and five in the 7th to earn the 14-6 victory.
In game two Northampton rode the 1-hit ptiching of
Shawn Heck (1-0) en route to a 16-0 victory. Heck allowed a first inning single and then retired 16 straight Cumberland batters, including six strikeouts.
Justin Scerbo led the Spartan's 14 hit attack with a 4 for 4 day (double, 3 stolen bases, 3 RBI) and
Greg Kolaronda added three hits a stolen base and a run scored.
"This was a big series win for us," stated Head Coach
Adrian Yaguez, who improved to 3-1 lifetime against Cumberland, "we have six conference games left and we need to be .500 to guarantee ourselves a spot in the postseason."
Northampton improves to 14-15 overall and 6-6 in conference play. The Spartans travel to Toms River, NJ on Saturday to face Ocean County College in a Region XIX doubleheader starting at 1:00pm.
Cumberland falls to 3-19 overall and 1-10 in conference.
