Basketball Sophomores to be Honored

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Northampton Community College Basketball will honor four sophomores tonight during the Passaic doubleheader, as they play their final regular season home game at the Spartan Center.

Ciara Mbonu, Josh Vargas, Elliot Gumbs and Joey Bamford will each be honored for their contributions to the basketball program.

Mbonu, a graduate of Bethlehem Catholic, has helped lead the women's basketball team to unparalled success in their second season in the NJCAA.  The Spartans, who qualified for Regionals in their first season of play in 2009-10, returned with a vengeance this season, entering tonight's game ranked 7th in the country and second in Region XIX with a record of 17-2 (21-5 overall).

Gumbs, has played a pivotal role in the Spartans first two years in the NJCAA.  A graduate of William Allen High School, Gumbs guided the team to the brink of the playoffs last season and then fought through injuries early this year to help guide the team a 19-8 / 16-5 record entering tonight's contest.

Bamford, an All-Region baseball selection last season, returned to the hardwood this semester and has provided an instant spark off the bench for the Spartans.  A key contributer during last season's initial NJCAA campaign, Bamford has played a key role down the stretch this season for the Spartans.

Josh Vargas will leave NCC as the school's all-time leading scorer and only person in school history to top the elusive 1000 point mark.  A graduate of Faith Christian, Vargas earned 2nd Team All-Region Honors and last season and 3rd Team All Region Honors this season.
