NEWTON, NJ - Josh Vargas broke the NCC career scoring record and the Spartans won their 15th game of the season with an 83-79 victory over Sussex County Community College on Monday evening.
Vargas eclipsed the mark held by NCC Hall of Famer Richard Johnson when he scored his first basket of the night on a driving layup 3 minutes into the contest, giving him 952 points during his career at Northampton. "I never expected to become the all-time leading scorer when I came to NCC," remarked Vargas, "I was hoping to contribute and help the team win, this is beyond my wildest expectations. I really want to thank my teammates and Coach Foley for all of their support."
Vargas, who finished with 24 points and 8 rebounds, helped lead the Spartans to a 20 point lead early in the second half before seven Skylander 3-pointers cut the margin to four late in the game.
"We were never able to put them away," commented Coach Kevin Foley, "I give Coach Jackson and his staff a lot of credit, his team kept battling all game."
Al Blount scored 14 points and dished out 6 assists and Joey Bamford added 14 points for the Spartans.
NCC, which improved to 15-8 overall and 12-5 in Region XIX, travels to Atlantic Cape Community College on Tuesday before returning home on Thursday to host Cumberland County College.
