Women's Basketball Opens Season with Upset of #3 Onondaga

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton women's basketball team opened the 2012-13 season with an upset of 3rd ranked Onondaga Community College, dowing the Lazers 80-68 on Sunday afternoon.

Sophomore Tiara Aziz scored 25 points to lead the Spartans, who pulled away in the second half after holding just a two point lead, 39-37, at halftime.

"That's a very good win over a very solid team," remarked Head Coach Art Wolfe, "Onondaga is always so skilled, you never feel safe with a lead against them.  I thought we did a much better job on the boards in the second half, we gave up way too many second chances early in the game."

Alyssa Gibson added 16 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists for the defending Region XIX champions.

Alex Taylor paced Onondaga (1-1) with 13 points.

Northampton, now 1-0 overall, travels to Division II Lackawanna College on Thursday November 8th for a 6pm tip-off.
