BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Gloucester County College, the nation's #1 team, used outstanding pitching and timely hitting to sweep a Region XIX doubleheader from NCC on Thursday, 11-0, 1-0.
In a rematch of last year's Region XIX championship game, the Roadrunners, 38-8 overall (21-3 Region XIX), pounded out 13 hits in game one, scoring at least one run in each inning to take an anti-climatic 11-0 victory.
Gloucester's Jeff Singer (8-0) earned the victory, throwing a complete game 3-hit shutout, while
Matt Smith (2-3) took the loss for NCC.
Richie Eilenberger was 2 for 3 and
Luke Szoke was 1 for 3 to pace the Spartan offense.
While game one lacked the typical drama of a Gloucester / Northampton matchup, game two lived up to the pregame hype.
The two teams combined for only 3 hits as GCC pulled out a 1-0 victory.
NCC starter
Jake Ruch had to be pulled after 2 1/3 innings due to tightness in his shoulder, but
Taylor Magditch (4-2) came in and shutdown the Roadrunner offense, not allowing a hit over his 3 2/3 innings of work.
Gloucester did manage to get their only run of the game off Magditch (4 walks, 4 strikeouts) in the top of the 6th when Eric Barbieri hit a long sacrifice fly.
Roadrunner starter Andy Sullivan (5-0) allowed only a 1st inning single to Eilenberger in earning the shutout victory.
NCC, now 21-15 overall (16-6 Region XIX), hosts Montgomery County Community College on Saturday in a crucial Region XIX doubleheader. Game time is set for noon, but officials are looking to move the game to 11am to avoid potental weather issues later in the day.
