HERKIMER, NY - Coming off a tough loss to Division I ASA College on Saturday night in the first round of the Herkimer County Tournament, the Northampton men's basketball team responded with a valiant effort vs. Alfred State College on Sunday in the consolation game, only to fall in overtime, 70-64.
The Spartans took a 30-19 lead to the locker room at halftime, but the Pioneers came out the gate quickly in the second half, attacking the rim and eventually tying the game a 45 with 6 minutes remaining in the contest.
Malcolm Lyles drained a 3-pointer at the 5:06 mark to make the score 50-47, Northampton, but the Pioneers kept battling, eventually cutting the margin to 55-54 with seconds remaining.
Dontae Davis made 1 of 2 free throws to make the score 56-54, but Alfred State scored a layup with 4.9 seconds remaining to send the game to overtime.
Alfred State took an early lead in the extra session, but
Andrew Miller hit a 3-pointer with 1:06 on the clock to bring NCC within two at 64-62. The two teams exchanged baskets to make it 66-64 with 13.4 remaining, before Alfred State was able to close out the victory from the foul line.
Northampton (6-1 in EPAC), falls to 10-6 overall and will return to action on January 17th when they travel to Union County College.
