Men's and Women's Basketball Set to Tip-Off 2014-15 Season

SYRACUSE, NY - The Northampton men's and women's basketball teams will open their respective 2014-15 campaigns this weekend when they compete in the Onondaga Community College Invitational.

The women, under veteran Head Coach Art Wolfe (443-170), are coming off an 18-6 season which saw them capture their second consecutive EPAC championship.  Wolfe returns two players; forward Lauren Thompson and guard Tiana Harris, from last years squad, which fell in the Region XIX quarterfinals to Middlesex County College.  When asked about the 2014-season, Wolfe responded, "I really like our size inside, I hope that we can use it to our advantage.  We are inexperienced at the guard position, but I think we will be ok once we get a few games under our belt."  The Spartans open the season on Saturday at 3pm vs. SUNY Sullivan, currently ranked 10th in the NJCAA national poll.

Saturday will mark the beginning of the Brennan McCarthy era for men's basketball, as the first year mentor leads the Spartans vs. fellow Region XIX and EPAC member, Delaware County Community College at 5pm.

The men return two players from last season's 14-13 squad, which lost in the Region XIX quarterfinals to eventual champion Brookdale Community College.  Josh Kaiser and Derek Kulp provide McCarthy with a strong inside/outside combination as the Spartans square off with the Phantoms, who received votes in the NJCAA national poll.  "I've been happy with the work ethic in  practice," commented McCarthy, "but it is yet to be seen how that translates onto the court during game action."
