Middlesex Outlasts Spartans in Tip-Off Tournament Opener

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Middlesex County College held on down the stretch to win their first round game of the Northampton Tip-Off Tournament, downing the host Spartans, 80-77, behind Bryant Webb's 29 points.

The Spartans, who trailed throughout the first half, cut an 11 point deficit (30 -19) wtih 5:15 remaining in the first half, to 3 at the intermission.  The Spartans stormed out the gate in the second half, taking a 44-41 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the contest.

The Colts battled back behind Webb and Eugene Campbell, taking a 62-52 lead with 7:23 remaining.  Coach McCarthy's troops cut the lead to 5 at 62-57 on a Michael Samuel layup with 6:18 remaining.

Tyrin Grantham (19 points) scored to make the score 66-61 and Josh Kaiser hit two free throws to make it 66-63 with just over 4 minutes remaining.  Middlesex then scored 5 straight points to increase their lead back to 8 at 71-63.

Grantham's put-back dunk with just over one minute remaining cut the margin to 76-74, but Middlesex was able to close the game out at the line and a last second three by the Spartans rimmed out at the buzzer.

Northampton (1-2) will face the County College of Morris on Sunday at 1pm in the men's consolation game.

Middlesex (1-0) will play Niagara County Community College in the championship at 5pm.
