Spartans Hold On for 61-60 Victory over Johnson College

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's basketball team held off Johnson College for a 61-60 victory on Tuesday evening at the Arthur L. Scott Center, improving to 4-4 in conference play and 5-7 overall.

In a very evenly played game, Northampton withstood a last second possession by the Jaguars to earn the hard-fought victory.  Johnson outrebounded Northampton 34-33, while the Spartans shot 42% from the field and Johnson finished at 39%.

"When you look at the boxscore, the one area that we had a clear advantage was from behind the arc," commented Head Coach Brennan McCarthy, "we knocked down eight 3-pointers (8 for 20) compared to their two (2 for 8).  Defensively we did a pretty good job, though I felt we gave up too many second chance opportunities in the second half.  Overall it's a good win against a very solid opponent."

Jeremiah Coleman scored 17 points, including a 5 for 10 performance from behind the arc, to lead Northampton, while Derek Kulp added 15 points and 7 rebounds.  Justin Escobar had 10 points and a team-high 12 rebounds.

Trailing 34-23 with 4 minutes remaining in the first half, Johnson finished the half on a 7-0 run to make the score 34-30 at the break. Johnson led for a majority of the second half, before the Spartans rallied late behind Kulp and Coleman.

Johnson, which fell to 6-8 overall and 4-4 in conference, was led by Justin Martin who finished with 13 points and 8 rebounds.

Northampton returns to action on Saturday when they host Bucks County Community College at 2pm in their last game of the first semester.
