TOMS RIVER, NJ -
Brianna Clymer (7 points), who was 0 for 5 from 3-point range this season, drilled a 3-pointer with 11 seconds remaining, with Northampton trailing by one, to give the Spartans a thrilling 56-54 victory over Ocean County College on Tuesday evening.
In a back and forth affair, Ocean led 51-48 with just over a minute remaining when
Katie Schickling (18 points) hit a triple to tie the game at 51. Â Northampton stopped Ocean on the next possession and
Brianna Morales (14 points) got a defensive rebound and was fouled and made both ends of the one and one to make the score 53-51. Â Ocean then hit a 3-pointer on their next possession to take a 54-53 lead with 34 seconds remaining. Â Northampton called a timeout to set up their final play and the Spartans got the ball to Clymer who drilled her game winner. Â Ocean got a final shot, but it bounced off the rim and
Lauren Thompson (13 points) secured the rebound to clinch the victory for Northampton.
"It was a great game," remarked Head Coach
Art Wolfe, "Ocean is always such a tough opponent, they are very well-coached and they make very few mistakes ... we were lucky to get out of here with a win."
Schickling hit six 3-pointers to give her 143 for her career, breaking the record of 139 previously held by Ashley Capozzolo (2006-08). Â Shickling now owns the Northampton records for 3-pointers in a career (143), season (86) and game (12).
Lacey LaRezza led Northampton with 13 rebounds.
Northampton finishes the regular season with an 18-5 overall record and will now wait to find out their seed for the upcoming Region XIX tournament.
Ocean is eliminated from any chance at postseason play with the loss, falling to 10-13 overall.
