Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Spartans Fall Short in Upset Bid of #3 Philadelphia

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's basketball team fell just short in their upset bid of 3rd ranked Community College of Philadelphia, falling 62-59 on Saturday afternoon at the Arthur L. Scott Center.

Philadelphia took their first lead of the second half with 3:59 remaining in the game, at 53-52.  Michael Samuel (31 points) tied the game at 57-57 with a 3 pointer with 1:03 remaining, but CCP's Marcus Smith drained a three ball with 33 seconds remaining to give the Colonials a 3-point advantage that they did not relinquish.

"I'm very proud of how our kids played today," commented Head Coach Brennan McCarthy, "I thought the guys stuck to our game plan for the most part, we did a good job defensively holding them to 37% shooting from the field ... we played them relatively even on the boards (34-32 CCP), but they hurt us from the charity stripe, outscoring us by 15 points.  Overall it was a good team effort ... hopefully we can come out with this same type of effort on Tuesday at Montgomery."

Rafiq Johnson led Philadelphia (15-1 / 11-0) with 20 points, while Basir Fulmore added 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Josh Coleman and Justin Escobar each grabbed 8 rebounds for Northampton.

The Spartans, who fall to 7-9 overall and 6-6 in conference, return to action on Tuesday January 20th when they travel to Blue Bell, PA to face Montgomery County Community College at 8pm.
