Men's Basketball Advances to Lazer Invitational Championship Game

Box Score SYRACUSE, NY - The Northampton men's basketball team defeated Bunker Hill Community College 73-65 in the first round of the Onondaga Lazer Invitational on Saturday to advance to the title game on Sunday at 2:15pm.

In a back and forth game in the first half, the Spartans took the lead for the first time with about 8 minutes to play in the half and pushed that lead to 8 points before Bunker Hill came back to tie the contest.  Northampton was able to regain the lead in the final two minutes of the half and took a 5 point advantage into the locker room at intermission.

The second half was a carbon copy of the first as the Spartans pushed their lead to 11 points before BHCC rallied to tie the contest.  Northampton then was able to put together a nice run and execute down the stretch for the victory.  "It was an up and down game," stated Head Coach Brennan McCarthy, "we still lack consistency, but tonight in the second half I thought the guys did a good job sticking to the game plan and executing down the stretch to earn a victory over a very solid opponent."

D'Montie Shaw (York, PA/William Penn ) led the Spartans with 17 points and grabbed 8 rebounds, while Anthony Miller (Bethlehem, PA /Liberty) had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.  Juan Perez-Jones (Morrisville, PA /Pennsbury ) scored 15 points and Edwin Lopez (East Stroudsburg, PA /Stroudsburg ) added 13, going 3 for 3 from the field and 6 for 6 from the charity stripe.

The Spartans as a team shot 23 of 54 from the field, 4 of 14 from behind the arc and 23 of 29 from the foul line. "We didn't shoot the ball well from the field and we still turned it over too much, but I thought our defense was much better tonight than on Thursday vs. Passaic," remarked McCarthy.

The Spartans will face host Onondaga Community College, who advanced to the championship with a 103-80 victory over Dutchess Community College.

Northampton and Onondaga met in the Lazer Invitational Championship last year with the Lazers prevailing, 83-77.  The Spartans advanced to the championship game in 2013 as well, falling to Anne Arundel Community College.
