Box Score SYRACUSE, NY - In a back-and-forth affair for 40 minutes, the championship game of the Onondaga Community College Invitational came down to the final 1.2 seconds when Northampton freshman
Juan Perez-Jones (Morrisville, PA /Pennsbury ) hit a transition 3-pointer to give the Spartans a thrilling 54-53 victory over the host Lazers.
Trailing by two with 18 seconds to play, the Spartans missed a wide-open layup which would have tied the game and were forced to foul the Lazers. Onondaga missed both free throws, giving the Spartans one last opporunity and Perez-Jones (12 points) made them pay with the game-winning trifecta. "It was very good ball game," commented Head Coach
Brennan McCarthy, "both teams tried to impose their will on the other and in the end it simply came down to us making one more play than they did."
Onondaga used a 2-3 zone for a majority of the game to stifle Northampton, as the Spartans only managed to shoot 3 for 18 from behind the arc (17%). "Coach Pasiac and his staff did a good job of slowing down the game," remarked McCarthy, "we struggled to knock down jump-shots, but in the second half we were able to apply a little more full-court pressure and speed the game up somewhat, creating some transition baskets."
Perez-Jones was named Tournament MVP, while
D'Montie Shaw (York, PA/William Penn ) earned All-Tournament honors. Shaw finished with 8 points, while
Justin Kellman (Reading, PA/Reading ) grabbed 11 rebounds and
Anthony Miller (Bethlehem, PA /Liberty) had 10 boards to pace Northampton off the glass.
Northampton, now 2-1 overall, will host Luzerne County Community College in their home opener on Tuesday at 8pm at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
