Strong Defensive Effort Leads Johnson College Over Northampton

SCRANTON, Pa. - Johnson College used an aggressive 2-3 zone defense to hold the Northampton men's basketball team to 20% shooting from 3-point range and earn a crucial 78-67 victory on Tuesday night at Jaguar Hall.

"Credit Johnson, they played extremely hard all night," commented Head Coach Brennan McCarthy, "their zone gave us trouble and we compounded things with multiple defensive lapses, allowing them to thrive in the halfcourt, transition and on the offensive boards."

Derek Kulp led Northampton with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Josh Coleman finished with 15 points and 6 boards.

The loss drops Northampton to 10-14 overall and 9-11 in Region XIX, putting the Spartans in a position where they need to win their final two games to qualify for the Region XIX tournament.

Johnson improves to 11-15 overall and 10-8 in Region XIX with the victory.

The Spartans return to action on Thursday when they host Sussex County Community College in a "home" game at the Monroe Campus in Tannersville, PA.  Game time is set for 7pm.
