Box Score PARAMUS, NJ - The Northampton women's basketball team opened the 2016-17 season with a convincing 60-37 road victory over Bergen Community College on Tuesday evening at Hernandez Hall.
The Spartans jumped out to a 15-4 lead after the first quarter, but Bergen battled back in the second quarter, cutting the margin to six at halftime, at 28-22. Â The Spartans ramped up the defensive intensity in the second half, holding Bergen to only 15 points, while scoring 32 for the final 23 point margin.
"We really got struggled in the second quarter," commented Head Coach
Tara Belfield, "the girls were trying to do too much and we got sloppy. Â I thought we regained our composure at halftime and played a strong second half."
Freshman
Dom Moser (Easton, PA/Easton ) led Northampton with 17 points and 6 steals, while
Katie Alvarez (Allentown, PA /Dieruff) had a team-high 14 rebounds. Â
Aisha Freeman (Reading, PA/Milton Hershey ) and
Nakia Rogers (Bushkill, PA/E. Stroudsburg North ) joined Moser in double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively. Â
Northampton, now 1-0, travels to Utica, NY this weekend to compete in the Mohawk Valley Invitational, where they will face Jefferson Community College at 5pm on Saturday in the first round.Â
