BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The Northampton men's basketball team exploded for 93 points as the Spartans defeated Johnson College, 93-71, on Tuesday evening in their home opener at the Arthur L. Scott Center.
The Spartans placed four players in double figures, led by
Tyerell Mann (East Stroudsburg, PA /Notre Dame - East Stroudsburg ) with 18,
Jerrel Burke (Morrisville, PA/Pennsbury ) 17,
Juan Perez-Jones (Morrisville, PA/Pennsbury ) 12 and
Isiah Hinton-Gray (Allentown, PA/William Allen ) 10. Northampton shot a blistering 56.7% from the field (38/67) including 11 of 21 from distance (52.4%), while holding the Jaguars to just 36% shooting. The Spartans dominated the backboards, hauling down 43 rebounds compared to 23 for Johnson,
Joe Cartagena (East Stroudsburg, PA /East Stroudsburg North ),
Justin Kellman (Reading, PA /Reading ) and Hinton-Gray each pulled down 7 boards. Northampton also dished out a season-high 25 assists on their 38 baskets, led by Perez-Jones with 6.
Northampton saw their lead balloon to 37 with 6:08 remaining in the contest, before Johnson closed out the game on a 20 to 5 run to narrow the final margin to 22. Zahir Robinson led Johnson with 35 points, including an 18 for 24 performance from the charity stripe.
The victory propels Northampton to 4-3 overall and 2-1 in Region XIX.
Johnson falls to 1-9 overall and 1-6 in Region XIX.
The Spartans are now off until November 29th when they host Luzerne County Community College at 8pm.
