Spartans Feast on Jaguars in Pre-Thanksgiving Tilt

SCRANTON, Pa. - The Northampton men's basketball team avoided a potential "trap-game" prior to Thanksgiving Break, downing winless Johnson College, on the road, 110-41 on Tuesday evening at the BJC Arena.

Carlos Gutierrez (Allentown, Pa./William Allen ) tossed in a team-high 23 points to lead 7 players  in double-figures, as the Spartans shot a blistering 53.3% (48/90) from the field.

Arnel Lewis (Easton, Pa. /Easton) finished with 15 points, 9 assists and 8 steals, while Isiah Hinton-Gray (Allentown, Pa./William Allen ) just missed a triple-double, as he tallied 12 points, 17 boards and 8 assists. Jay Davis (Northwest, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) added 12 points, while Tyrese Stewart (Allentown, Pa. /William Allen ) had a career-high 10 points and 9 rebounds and Justin Ulmer (Norristown, Pa. /Norristown) chipped with 10.

The Spartans led 60-18 at halftime and never trailed in the one-sided affair.  "Honestly, I was little nervous coming up here right before break," commented Head Coach Brennan McCarthy, "it is a tough venue and I know our kids were looking forward to getting away for a few days for the holiday, so I was a little worried we may come out flat, but credit our guys, they didn't allow that to happen."

The Spartans, who lead the country in defensive field goal percentage (33%), held Johnson to 22.2% shooting on Tuesday night.  "The guys have been working real hard on the defensive end and they take pride in leading the country in that category," remarked McCarthy.

The win moves Northampton to 8-0 overall, 5-0 in Region XIX and 4-0 in the EPAC.

Johnson falls to 0-7 overall, 0-7 in Region XIX and 0-6 in conference play.

The Spartans are now off until November 28th when they travel to Nanticoke, Pa to face the Trailblazers of Luzerne County Community College at 7pm.
