LINCROFT, NJ - The Northampton women's basketball team saw their season come to an end on Sunday afternoon in the Region XIX Championship Game, falling 58-51 to Brookdale Community College at Collins Arena. The win propels the Jersey Blues to the NJCAA National Tournament in Utica, NY, March 16-18.
The Spartans fell behind early, trailing 17-2 in the first quarter, before rallying to cut it to one at halftime, 27-26.  Northampton took their first lead of the game in 3rd quarter, outscoring Brookdale 15-12.  The 4th quarter was a back and forth affair until Region XIX Player of the Year Che'Kasha Andrews had back to back 3 point plays to extend Brookdale's lead from two to eight with under 2 minutes to play.  Andrews finished with 33 points, including 6 three pointers. "It was an unfortunate way to end the season," commented Head Coach
Tara Belfield, "we really struggled to shoot again today ... statistically the game was even in just about every category, except from behind the arc where we finished 0 for 14 and Brookdale knocked down 8 out of 30. Â I'm proud of the girl's effort ... they never gave up, we just didn't have enough today on the offensive end."
Dom Moser (Easton, PA/Easton ) and
Katie Alvarez (Allentown, PA /Dieruff) each had 12 points to lead the Spartans, while Moser added 14 rebounds and 5 assists. Â
Northampton finishes the season 19-6, while Brookdale improves to 22-6 as they move on to the NJCAA National Tournament.Â
