NEWTON, NJ - The Northampton men's basketball team shot a blistering 56% from the field, including 63% from distance, in downing Sussex County Community College, 98-79, on Tuesday evening at the Kuntz Center.
Jay Davis (Northwest, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) led five Spartans in double figures as the team knocked down 39 of 70 field goal attempts and 12 of 19 3-point attempts. Davis finished with 23, followed by
Isiah Hinton-Gray (Allentown, Pa./William Allen ) with 16,
Arnel Lewis (Easton, Pa. /Easton) and
Najee Cash (Bethlehem, Pa. /Freedom ) each with 14 and
Carlos Gutierrez (Allentown, Pa./William Allen ) with 13.
"We really shot it well tonight," commented Head Coach
Brennan McCarthy, "we have been struggling a little bit offensively lately, so it was good to see the guys knocking down shots tonight."
In addition, the Spartans recorded 25 assists on the 39 field goals, including a game-high 10 from Arnel Lewis.
Hinton-Gray paced Northampton on the boards with 13, while
Tyrese Stewart (Allentown, Pa. /William Allen ) and
Jay Davis (Northwest, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) each had 6.
The win moves Northampton to 20-5 overall and 16-3 in Region XIX.
The 20 wins are the the most for the Spartans since 2012-13 when Kevin Foley led Northampton to a 20-9 record, a Region XIX runner-up finish and an EPAC title.
Sussex falls to 6-21 overall and 6-17 in the Region.
The Spartans are back home on Thursday when they host Thaddeus Stevens at 7pm in their final EPAC game of the season.
