Box Score STONE RIDGE, NY - The Northampton men's basketball team dropped a non-conference match-up on Saturday, falling to NJCAA Division II Ulster County Community College, 91-77.
The Spartans found themselves trailing by 23 points at halftime, 53-30, before going on a run in the second half to cut the margin to 7, with just over 10 minutes to play.
"We made a real nice run in the second half," commented Head Coach
Brennan McCarthy, "but we had dug ourselves such a deep hole, we just ran out of energy trying to complete the comeback. Defensively we really struggled in the first half, I thought we tightened things up in the second half, but we can't up 53 points in 20 minutes and expect to win."
Jay Davis (Northwest, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds,
Carlos Gutierrez (Allentown, Pa./William Allen ) added 18 points,
Arnel Lewis (Easton, Pa. /Easton) 11, and
Tyrese Stewart (Allentown, Pa. /William Allen ) and
Isiah Hinton-Gray (Allentown, Pa./William Allen ) both finished with 10.
Hinton-Gray led the Spartans on the boards with 12, while Davis and
Elijah Barrett (Harrisburg, Pa. /Harrisburg) each grabbed 10 rebounds.
Lewis had a team-high 6 assists, as the Spartans finished 33 for 71 from the field, including a very solid 7 of 15 from distance.
The loss drops Northampton to 17-4 overall, while Ulster improved to 12-7.
The Spartans return to conference play on Tuesday night when they travel to the Community College of Philadelphia for a 7pm contest.
