CORNING, NY - After a week filled with postponements and games played in snowy, frigid conditions, the Northampton Baseball team finally got to play a couple games in spring-like conditions, sweeping Corning Community College on Saturday afternoon at Red Baron Field.
GAME ONE - WON 20-2
Trevor McGee (Bensalem, PA/Bensalem) took the mound in game one and earned his first victory of the season, throwing a complete game 2-hitter. McGee walked 5 and struck out 10 in the victory.
Tommy Dunleavy (Bushkill, PA/East Stroudsburg North) powered the offense, finishing 3 for 3 with 5 RBI, including a 3-run homerun in the 2nd and a 2-run shot in the 4th giving him 5 homeruns on the season.
Tyler Melko (Knoxville, PA/Cowanesque Valley) laced a 2-run double to highlight an 8-run 5th inning,
Derek Stento (New Milford, PA/Blue Ridge) went 2 for 2,
Tyler Horvath (Cresco, PA/Pocono Mt. East) had a double and a RBI,
Jakob Fry (Reading, PA/Exeter) was for 1 for 2 with a triple and a RBI and
Mike Ferrara (Cresco, PA/Pocono Mt. East) was 2 for 2 with 2 RBI to pace the 13-hit attack.
GAME TWO - WON 10-4
The Spartans received another complete game performance in game two, as
Drew Jackson (Berwyn, PA/Conestoga) improved to 3-2 with a 9-strikeout performance. Jackson allowed 1 earned run on 3 hits and walked 3 in his 7 innings of work.
Tyler Melko (Knoxville, PA/Cowanesque Valley) picked up 3 hits and scored 3 runs in game two, while
Cody Brown (Tunkhannock, PA/Tunkhannock) finished 2 for 4.
Henry Peguero (Wyomissing, PA/Wyomissing) hit his team-leading 6th dinger of the year, while
Mike Ferrara (Cresco, PA/Pocono Mt. East),
Christian Del Toro (Trujillo Alto, PR/Perkiomen School) and
CJ Gantz (Bath, PA/Northampton) each contributed a hit toward the team's 11 total hits.
The doubleheader sweep puts Northampton, who received votes in the latest NJCAA poll, at 19-8 overall heading into their Sunday doubleheader with 2nd ranked Cumberland County College (24-7).
The Region XIX foes met last year in an epic Region XIX championship series, with the Dukes winning the Region Championship, but with both teams earning bids to the NJCAA World Series.
Sunday's match-up is set for noon at Spartan Park.
Northampton is 9-11 all-time vs. the Dukes.
